Professional Art Ed Sequence (Secondary)
Library Lesson Description and Rationale -
Illinois State University's Art Teacher Education program allows students to co-teach lessons to community members at the Normal Public Library in town. I co-developed a lesson based on identity created with negative and positive space for this lesson. This topic was picked since the community members ranged from middle school students to retired individuals. Every member could relate to the idea of identity, and positive and negative space is a concept middle schoolers can understand if taught effectively. The community members are taught about and discuss three artists who use positive in negative space in their artwork to create an interesting composition. This allows the teacher to determine prior knowledge some members may have on this design method and give the members an opportunity to view examples that use positive and negative space. It also acts as a way to create inspiration. After this, students create a 9x12 positive and negative space artwork with watercolor and black construction paper. These materials were chosen because the watercolor and the construction paper act as the two spaces. Students can visually see the difference between positive and negative space by having a colorful watercolor section vs. the black construction paper.

Accommodations for Library Lesson -
The community members are provided with scissors and Exacto knives for paper cutting. These two options work great because some members need the scissors if they have difficulty using the Exacto knife. On the flip side, the members that want to get little details with their paper can use the Exacto knife. There are also stencils if members need assistance drawing out shapes or imagery that they will cut.

"Unconventional Surfaces" Plan Description and Rationale -
Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery – The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
For my unit plan, I created it with the intent to teach an advanced high school art class. This unit asks the students to learn about four artists who use create artwork on items other than art paper or canvas, such as bingo sheets, decorative papers, and book pages. Their artwork has to also be a representational peice that relates to themselves. This challenges the student because they have to think about how their artwork is going to connect to their chosen surface, which is a perfect challenge for advanced art students who like to have more freedom in their artwork.

Artwork Example and Artist Statement -
Below is an example of artwork that could be created for this lesson. As well as an artist statement for the artwork. The students could be inspired by these examples when creating the artwork and the artist's statement.

This drawing is made with ballpoint pen on a ripped and folded eggshell white envelope. The viewer can tell it's a used envelope due to the addresses and stamps, establishing a meaning to the envelope rather than just being an envelope. The vibrant strawberry red and dark forest green stamps are hand-drawn in colored pencil. The subject of this drawing is my grandmother, Judith Stanley, and the ballpoint pen helps capture the twinkle in her eye. The intentional detail points out every characteristic of Judy. The pen allows the typography to be shown through the subject instead of being covered and hidden away. This device creates a slightly transparent effect on the drawing.
This artwork is a representative piece of my connection to my family. I value my family members and hope never to sever that tie, even if my connection with my grandmother relies heavily on our communication through letters and calls. Growing up, my grandmother has always mailed my sister and me letters of poems she wrote, which inspired this piece. The fold and rips and the subject still dominating are intended to show that my connection to my grandma still lives on, even though envelopes tend to be ripped away and tossed. It also insinuates this is an old envelope, showing that these letters have been sent for years. Overall, this represents my unbreakable bond with my family and my desire to be just like my grandmother.
For this piece, I was most inspired by Delita Martin, who creates art on decorative papers. I like how Delita Martin uses pencil so the viewer can still see the decorative papers through the subject, which is the effect I tried to create with the writing and stamps on the envelope. It is also a powerful move by Martin to have the subject staring right at the viewer, which I tried to accomplish with my subject. It is interesting that Martin also uses mixed-media in her piece, something I included by having the envelope, colored pencil, and pen. It makes the work more dynamic.

Literacy Lesson Description and Rationale -
Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
This literacy lesson is used as a formative assessment for the "Unconventional Surfaces" unit plan. The Nearpod activity asks students to learn about Delita Martin, the prominent artist for this unit, through a linked article in the lesson. This lesson asks students to "write 3-5 sentences on what the article says about the artist's intentions, choices, and influences. You can also swipe through her exhibition gallery to help answer the prompt". This assessment helps students practice researching an artist and interpreting the artist's artwork and their choices. Practicing research skills is beneficial since students will explore artists related to their ideas during this unit's brainstorming process. Provided for the students is an example response made by the teacher before beginning their response. This example helps students see what is expected of them and gives suggestions for what they can look for in the article. The Nearpod literacy lesson is very beneficial for students to see artwork examples, practice reading, research, and writing skills, as well as capture inspiration from a brilliant artist.
Teaching Philosophy Description -
7M: articulates a logical rationale for the role of the visual arts in the school curriculum, including philosophical and social foundations
for visual arts education.
My teaching philosophy stems a lot from the teachers I had who were there for me other than only to teach me information. As teachers, we are here to help students reach their academic standards, but teachers can also be an outlet for their students and provide them with a safe, educational environment. I plan to foster an environment where my students feel comfortable talking to me about anything. As their teacher, I will be there to help them academically and show them what they can achieve on their own. I want to create an environment where we all mutually respect each other. I can make a safe space of respect by acknowledging and respecting the needs of each one of my students. I plan to stay on top of my student's academic and mental health needs by talking to them and keeping an open lane of communication. Academic success and mental health correlate with each other significantly, so I plan to design my classroom and instruction in a way that promotes positive mental health. Art can reduce anxiety and stress and be an outlet, but how I present myself as a teacher and design my room can also influence that. So, I always imagined including stress-relieving activities in the instruction and creating my classroom in a way that generates a calming atmosphere. I always enjoyed and learned better in a classroom that didn't feel so uptight and strict with a teacher who seemed like they wanted to be there. That is what I want to avoid when I am a teacher. Instead, I want to develop a classroom that fosters freedom, creativity, and joy while staying on task.
Teaching Philosophy Rationale -
I've developed this teaching philosophy from the knowledge I have gained from all of my teacher education classes, but I finally created my perfect philosophy after taking SED 344. SED 344 is a teacher education course focusing on accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities. After taking this course, I realized that my teaching philosophy needs to focus more on accommodating for students with disabilities, considering the art room can be quite all over the place due to the materials. For example, I mentioned how I wanted to create a stress-relieving atmosphere, which can be made by keeping the students' needs in mind. If I were to have a student with autism, I know from SED 344 that low lighting and limited decorations can help a student with autism feel relaxed in that classroom.
I also make creating a safe space a significant point in my teaching philosophy because some students may not have any outlet besides school, specifically the art room. I want to be there for the students that may not have anyone else, and I want them to feel as comfortable being themselves as they can in my classroom. This is due to the current social issues regarding identity and sexual orientation. Students may not be accepted where they come from, but I will always accept my students in my classroom.
Overall, I made my teaching philosophy match my style of teaching, as well as match the current needs of my students. This can change with every new set of students, but if I remember to constantly consider who my students are, their needs, and what they are learning, I can create the perfect educational atmosphere for them.

DescriptionDuring this school year, I was given the opportunity to create a mural for a local town bar. In my hometown of Naperville, there is a bar called White Tavern. They had a wall going to the girl's bathroom that they wanted to have a mural. Before the mural, I was also instructed to paint different wall colors since the walls before weren't pleasing to the owner's eye anymore. This bar is located in the downtown area of Naperville, so it gets a wide range of customers every day, so this mural gets a lot of traffic. The owner did not have many restrictions besides the fact that they wanted it to relate to the bar in some way and that they wanted to approve the design before painting. This mural extends across one wall with a door between two subjects, then extends past a corner onto the next wall.
Below is a slideshow of the artwork from multiple viewpoints. |
RationaleI decided to paint a mural of women throughout history from diverse backgrounds considering this hallway leads to the girl's bathroom. The women included are Amelia Earhart, Aretha Franklin, Audrey Hepburn, Selena Quintanilla, and Marilyn Monroe. I wanted the artwork to inspire the women who walk by it and attract all visitors through the brands involved in the artwork and the White Tavern memorabilia. The choice of black and white over red was intentional because I thought it would give it an old-timey feel and capture the eye with its high contrast. I appreciated having this opportunity, and it was such a good feeling seeing people look at the mural during and after the process with amazement. I enjoy creating artwork for others, especially knowing it will make their day.

DescriptionThis year I entered the WIB T-Shirt design contest. My friend Hailey Holic is a member of Women in Business (WIB) at Illinois State University and suggested I enter the contest. They didn't have very many requirements, so the designs were ranged and varied in design. After all of the designers submitted their ideas, the members of WIB then voted for their favorite design in a Google Form. At the end I did not get voted as the top choice, but I did come in second!
Below is a picture of the design that I submitted. |
RationaleFor this design I created it digitally, inspired by three successful women. Kylie Jenner and Beyonce are the two figures on the right, and then the figure on the left is inspired by the character from Legally Blonde, Elle Woods, since she is a fictional character that inspires strong, brilliant, successful women. I also put the WIB logo in the back, but that is something I wish I could have changed somehow. I like it there but I also wish I could have integrated it in a different way to showcase the logo more. Overall, I am happy with my design and was pleased even though it didn't get chosen for the final design. I think doing things like this is a good way for artists to get themselves out there in their community.
